A reference desk for Canadian geology — rock types, glacial landforms, regional formations, and the ways the landscape has shaped how the country was settled.
Stone & Field focuses on the geology and physical landscape of Canada. The articles here deal with rock formations — their age, mineral composition, and how they formed — along with the glacial and fluvial processes that shaped the terrain after the ice retreated roughly 10,000 years ago.
The content is written to be useful to anyone with an interest in Canadian landscape: hikers, landowners, students of geography, and anyone curious about why the Shield looks the way it does or how a drumlin forms. No background in geology is assumed.
Each article is based on published geological surveys and peer-reviewed sources. The primary reference for provincial geology is Natural Resources Canada's geological atlas series; for glacial landforms, the Geological Survey of Canada's Quaternary mapping programs. Where possible, direct links to source documents are included.
Content is reviewed for accuracy before publication. Corrections and additions are welcomed at info@stoneandfield.org.
